Built in 1786 as military barracks and converted into residential buildings in 1789, this listed property (Ms-c82) has become an iconic housing complex in Geneva’s Old Town. It exemplifies the continuity of a major historical heritage that remains in daily use and actively inhabited.
The project forms part of a comprehensive restoration program combined with targeted energy upgrades. Its objective is to improve residents’ comfort and enhance the building’s energy performance in a sustainable manner, while preserving the integrity of the historic envelope, the original materials, and the architectural quality of the façades.
Developed in close collaboration with the Service des Monuments et Sites (SMS) and the Office cantonal de l’énergie (OCEN), the intervention includes :
- restoration of the stone façades and sculpted elements ;
- repairs and thermal insulating of the roof ;
- renovation of the historic interior windows with the installation of insulated glazing ;
- restoration of the winter windows with drawn glass, and renovation of the shutters.
The replacement of the existing heating system with a pellet boiler completes the set of measures implemented, contributing to the building’s long-term sustainability, a reduction in its environmental impact, and an improved quality of life for its occupants.
